How to change our destiny?

Some people will go for fortune telling or feng shui to change their destiny. Actually there is a book called  Liao-Fan's Four Lessons (了凡四訓) give us ideas on how to change our own destiny.

We, Malaysian who stay in Klang valley is really lucky as Teacher Chai (蔡礼旭老师) is now giving  a series of  free talk about Liao-Fan's Four Lessons (了凡四訓)  on

Liao-Fan Yuan was born during Ming Dynasty, in about 1550, in Jiangsu Province, Wujiang County. Liao-Fan wrote a book, Liao-Fan's Four Lessons (了凡四訓) , which were written originally to teach his son, Tian-Chi Yuan. The principal behind those lessons is that destiny can be changed through proper cultivation of kindness and humility. Thus one should not be bound by fate but by one's own action.
Liao-Fan was predicted by a wise monk, Mr. Kong that he would only live to the age of fifty-three and had no son. In relating his own life experience in changing destiny, Liao-Fan, at the age of sixty-nine, wrote and taught these four lessons to his son.

Later he met a zen  master , he told him by cultivate kindness, he is able to change his destiny. He really carried out and manage to  change his destiny. He lived longer, got a son and avoid many misfortunes.

The first lesson shows how to create destiny. The second lesson explains the ways to reform. The third reveals the ways to cultivate kindness and the fourth discloses the benefits of the virtue of humility.
After hearing this wonderful book, one may feel more open and confident towards life, and at the same time, courageously compelled to follow the example of Liao-Fan in changing one's original destiny. Liao-Fan's Four Lessons is truly a rare book which is not only precious to an individual's spiritual needs, but is also capable of transforming unhealthy attitudes in today's society.

Excerpt from his book
3 conditions for reform:
1. One must feel shame
2. One must know fear
3. One must have determination and courage
3 methods to reform:
1. Changing through action
2. Changing through reasoning
3. Changing from the heart
10 ways to cultivate kindness:
1. Supporting the practice of kindness
2. Harboring love and respect.
3. Helping others succeed
4. Persuading others to practice kindness
5. Helping those in desperate need.
6. Developing public project for the greater benefit of the people.
7. Giving through donation
8. Protecting the proper teaching
9. Respecting our elders
10. Love and cherishing all living beings

The Wooden Bowl
I guarantee you will remember the tale of the Wooden Bowl tomorrow, a week from now, a month from now,
a year from now.

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year
-old grandson.
The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered.
The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and
failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor.
When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.
The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess.
'We must do something about father,' said the son.

'I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.'
So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner.

There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner.
Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.
When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone.

Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.
The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor.

He asked the child sweetly, 'What are you making?' Just as sweetly, the boy responded,
'Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up. '
The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.
The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks.. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.
That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.

For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason,
neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.
On a positive note, I've learned that, no matter what happens, how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.
I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles four things:

a rainy day,the elderly, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.
I've learned that making a 'living' is not the same thing as making a 'life.'
I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.
I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw
 something back sometimes.
I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you.
But, if you focus on your family, your friends, the needs of others, your work and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you.
I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision.
I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one.
I've learned that every day, you should reach out and touch someone.
People love that human touch -- holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.
I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.
I've learned that you should pass this on to everyone you care about. I just did!

FRIENDSHIP CANDLE

NOTICE AT THE END,
THE DATE THE CANDLE WAS STARTED.

GONNA GIVE YOU GOOSE BUMPS.

I am not going to be the one who lets it die. I found it believable --

angels have walked beside me all my life--and they still do.

*********************

This is to all of you who
mean something to me,

I pray for your happiness.
The Candle Of Love, Hope & Friendship

This candle was lit on the
15th of September, 1998

Someone who loves you has helped

keep it alive by sending it to you.

Don't let The Candle of Love, Hope and Friendship die.

Pass It On To All Of Your Friends
and Everyone You Love!

May God richly bless you!

I have learnt that

1) Parents must lead by example. That is the most effective way of educating our children
2) This story is exactly what taught by Confucious  "Do not do to others that which we do not want them to do to us."

3) We should always remind ourselves about law of kamma

This also make me to recall the following dzg stories and ponder over it.

1) Confucious's descendant never get angry, why?....

as they have never seen people get angry at their house.

2) A couple are busy taking foods to their children, instead of their parents or
A daughter inlaw who will always offer fruits to her children whenever her in laws are not at home and asked her children not to tell the grandparents.

Whom will their children offer food to when they have grown up, their parents or their own kids?

  • Only in silence can we see the TRUTH
  • How do deal with restlessness in the mind? let it be and let go.
  • Relaxation is the key to health. Kindness is the key to relaxation.
  • Meditation can cure insomnia and stomach pain
  • Be kind , be gentle, then we can experience peace
  • Meditation is the best medicine for depression
  • When is the best time to meditate? NOW
  • Is it advisable to meditate with lying down posture? It is not recommended as it will use to ended up with snoring.Unless it is not in normal sleeping posture.
  • Is it advisable to meditate after heavy meal? No, as one is normally sleepy after a heavy meal.

An Inspiring talk about FORGIVENESS

Recently, I attended an inspiring talk about forgiveness by Sis Chan Kah Yin at BUBs. Below are some of the gist of her talk .

  • To err is human, to forgive divine ---Alexander Pope
  • We must have compassion to forgive others and ourselves
  • Anger is a punishment use inflict unto ourselves due to the mistakes of others ---Master Cheng Yen
  • There are 3 types of persons 1)Those who carve on rock (take revenge) 2)those scratch on the sand 3)those who write on water (the are the wisest as they forgive and forget easily)
  • Hatred is never appeased by hatred. It is only by love. This is an eternal law---Dhammapada V5
  • Forgive and let it go
  • To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover the prisoner was you.
  • For a beautiful South Africa, there are 2 words--goodness and forgiveness---Nelson Mandela who was imprison for 27 years
  • What goes around comes around, let the universe decide. The law of kamma will take care of it,hence don't need to get angry or seek revenge. just forgive and let go.
  • The Tsunami in 2005 has taught us that :1) actually we need very little to survive.2}What is the point to accumulate so many possession?
  • If we react in kindness/compassion.Instead of anger, we will always be alright.Eg we were overtook by other driver without signal light. If we thought 'oh, pity guy, he must be rushing for some emergency cases. or be thankful that our car was not knocked by him etc.

  • The Cookie Thief

This is to a scenario encouraging us not to rush into judgments.

A woman was waiting at an airport one night With several long hours before her flight. She hunted for a book in the airport shop Bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop. She was engrossed in her book but happened to see That the man beside her as bold as could be Grabbed a cookie or two from the bag between Which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene.  She munched cookies and watched the clock As this gutsy cookie thief diminished her stock.
She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by Thinking "If I wasn't so nice I'd blacken his eye". With each cookie she took he took one too And when only one was left she wondered what he'd do. With a smile on his face and a nervous laugh He took the last cookie and broke it in half.
He offered her half as he ate the other She snatched it from him and thought "Oh brother, this guy has some nerve and he's also rude Why he didn't even show any gratitude".
She had never known when she had been so galled and sighed with relief when her flight was called.  She gathered her belongings and headed for the gate Refusing to look back at the thieving ingrate.  She boarded the plane and sank in her seat Then sought her book which was almost complete.  As she reached in her baggage she gasped with surprise There was her bag of cookies in front of her eyes:
"If mine are here" she moaned with despair "Then the others were his and he tried to share"
"Too late to apologize she realized with grief" That she was the rude one, the ungrateful, the thief

  • Andrew Matthew in his book 'Being Happy' and ' Follow your heart', mentioned that we can't change others, we can only changed ourselves.
  • Don't harbour resentment, but do not be a fool either.Learn the lesson and let go of the hatred,
  • Why is it hard for someone to forgive? It is due to attachment to our own ego. We only think of ourselves. We think we are very important. To solve it must seek first to understand by putting ourselves in other person's shoes.Ask ourselves why he do this to me?
  • How to forgive ourselves? 1)repent,but do not dwell on it 2)repair the harm done (be proactive) 3)determine not to do it again 4)remedial behavior  is to do more good.Eg good deeds=water, bad deeds =salt. If we add few spoon of salt to a cup of water, the water will taste very salty.Adding more water will dilute the salty taste. So, doing good deeds will 'dilute' bad kamma, as we really don't know how much bad deeds we have done during our past lives!

  • “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” === Mahatma Ghandi

  • Richard Carlson (1911-2006) taught us to be more accepting  and less judgemental in his books, don't sweat the small stuff.
  • See them as tiny as infants or 100 year old adults
  • Ask yourself, does it matter you 1 year from now?
  • Choose being kind over being right & you'll always be all right. Eg  If your car was banged by someone from behind, how would you react?.Obviously is other's fault. if your reaction is ;"Oh my goodness, look at the damage on your beautiful car. What can I do for you?", the defensiveness and fear of the other driver will disappear.
  • Byron Katie in her book 'loving what is and  'the work' .The Work is a simple yet powerful process of inquiry that teaches you to identify and question the thoughts that cause all the suffering in the world. It’s a way to understand what’s hurting you, and to address the cause of your problems with clarity.
In its most basic form, The Work consists of
four questions and your turnarounds. For example, your statement might be “[Name] doesn't listen to me.” Find someone in your life about whom you have had that thought, take that statement and put it up against the four questions and turnarounds of The Work.

    Step 1 Is it true?

Step 2 Can you absolutely know that it's true?

Step 3 How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?

Who would you be without the thought?

Then turn around the concept you are questioning, and don't forget to find at least three genuine, specific examples of each turnaround.
  • THE 90/10 PRINCIPLE

    Author: Stephen Covey
10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react. What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us.  You determine the other 90%! How? By your reaction.

There are those who don't realised that 1 day we must all die. Those who realise this will quickly settle their quarrel.

The reason why you are so tired - acidic blood

Under  alkaline condition, cancerous cells will not be able to grow, or even to survive.

Actual case studies, very important, please read patiently and pass this on.

Even if you have read this before, you should reread this,  especially the list of acidic and alkaline foodstuff , best to read several times and remember.

Please read this article in full patiently, it will be helpful to your health.

More than 30 years ago, a Mr Zhang who worked in the public sales department of a Taipei Brewery, participated in the brewery overseas study selection examination, and passed with flying colours..

Before going overseas during the physical examination at a public hospital, it was discovered that he had a tumour growth in his lung the size of a child's fist, and therefore was not able to go overseas to study.

The greatly disappointed Mr Zhang had always been suspicious that the diagnosis was wrong. So he went to another hospital for a check-up, the result confirm that previous diagnosis was not in error.

For the youthful and healthy Mr Zhang to be stricken down with  such terminal illness, in his despair, he rang his old classmate who at the time was Taidong County Government, Huangsun County Mayor's secretary, Mr Wei.

Mr Wei rushed to Taipei during his rest day on a Sunday to see Mr Zhang.

Mr Zhang discussed with Mr Wei in detail his despair and pessimism, and entrusted his friend regarding his affairs after his death. Coincidentally, Mr Wei was a good friend of Dr Lu Geling, who was in  charge of the Maijie Hospital, 1945-55, and specialised in the clinical research into cancer cases.

He immediately suggested that Mr Zhang go to see Dr Lu for treatment. At first, Mr Zhang said he preferred not to see anymore doctors, so as not to add further to his misery.

當即建議前往訪求呂博士醫治,起初張先生說不願再看醫生,以免徒增傷悲;

But Mr Wei told him that he had telephoned Dr Lu before to seek his advice and arranged an appointment. Mr Zhang felt obligated and went with Mr Wei to meet Dr Lu

When Dr Lu met with Mr Zhang, Dr Lu said: ' Mr Wei is a friend and introduced you and I to get to know each other. This is destiny. Thank you. Let me ask you do you know why is cancer referred to as  terminal illness?'

Both Mr Zhang and Mr Wei did not know how to answer.

Dr Lu explained: 'There are only two approaches taken by humans to treat cancer to-date. The first is to destroy the source of the disease. The second is to increase the capability to fight the disease.

But the strange thing is that, whether we use Cobalt 60 or other drugs to destroy the cancer cells, before the cancer cells are killed, the good cells are destroyed first.

On the other hand, no matter what nutrients or supplements we use,  before the good cells have a chance to absorb them, the cancer cells have taken them up and it simply speeds up the growth of cancer.

另無論用什麼營養、補藥,好的細胞還未吸收,癌細胞卻先吸收、讓癌長得更快;

Therefore both approaches are doomed to failure, that is why cancer is terminal.'

Dr Lu continues: 'Human beings are most clever, they have successfully landed on the moon. But why is it no one ever questioned the above two approaches for treating cancer  which are nothing but self defeating dead-ends, and try to seek a third avenue?

When I was conducting clinical research in Majie Hospital, I had many opportunities to work with and being helped by many colleagues in the Hospital. I discovered that the blood tests of 100% of the cancer patients showed that the blood samples are acidic.

Those Buddhist monks and nuns who are long term vegetarians and live very close to Nature, their blood are prevalently weakly alkaline and amongst them, there has yet to discover any cancer cases.

Therefore, I boldly concluded that under weakly alkaline condition, cancer cells are not able to grow, or even to survive.

Mr Zhang, I would suggest that starting from now you reduce your intake of the acidic meaty  dishes.

Take more of the alkaline food. In addition you can take green algae and soup made from water chestnuts with skin,

modify your physical condition, and try seriously to have a regular life style which is close to Nature;

改變你的體質,並勵行接近自然的良好生活規律;

If you can manage to stay alive for five years, you should have no further problem. I wish you the best of luck.'

Mr Zhang followed Dr Lu's suggestion and seriously altered his eating habits.

Every day, he ate  green algae, drank chestnut soup, be optimistic and did an appropriate amount of exercise, and went back to the same public hospital for a check up. It was discovered that not only that the tumour did not increase in size, on the contrary it showed signs of shrinking, and surprised the hospital staff conducting the check-up as a miracle. Five years later, the tumour had shrunk to such a state as to almost disappear.

After almost 40 years, presently Mr Zhang's health is totally normal, and living a very pleasant life.

Following Mr Zhang, a Mr Chen Tianshou, who was previously Head of the General Administration of the Taidong Provincial Hospital, was similarly diagnosed with lung cancer.

繼張先生之後,有位前台東省立醫院總務課長陳添壽先生,同樣得到肺癌;

When Mr Wei heard of this, he told Mr Chen of the experience of Mr Zhang, and Mr Chen started to follow the instructions of Dr Lu to change his physical condition. The outcome was that he was able to recover fully from the cancer, just like Mr Zhang.

At that time, Mr Lu and his family have emigrated to the United States. After the two cases, he returned to Taiwan and met up with Mr Wei.

Mr Wei told Dr Lu about the experiences of Mr Zhang and Mr Chen, and suggested that let the two of them detailed their experiences to Dr Lu in person, so that Dr Lu could publish a report on his self cure body conditioning method.

Dr Lu very humbly replied:

呂博士謙虛地回答說:

'I am too old, besides, I do not have any clinical records of the outcomes. I would ask that you tell your
friends and relatives, if they are agreeable, then please continue this experience and spread the words ? ?

..........。」
