Actions to reduce carbon dioxide(CO2)
The articles below are translated from The world of Tzu Chi no.84
Due to global warming , the weather and ecology have shown strange phenomenon. This is re.lated to excessive release of CO2 via human activities into the air.
We can save our motherland -Earth, if we are willing to make minor changes in our daily life, which can reduce the CO2 as follows:
1 Set a suitable air conditioner temperature (26-28 C) . If we can raise the air cond in our house by 1 C, we can save about 6% on electricity
2.Unplug electronics from the wall when you’re not using them
Even when turned off, things like hairdryers, cell phone chargers and televisions use energy. In fact, the energy used to keep display clocks lit and memory chips working accounts for 5 percent of total domestic energy consumption and spews 18 million tons of carbon into the atmosphere every year!
3 Using energy saving bulb to replace traditional bulb which can save electricity more than 60% .
4 Using staircase, save electricity and exercise for good health.
5 Doing recycling
Don't throw away plastic begs and boxes. Instead, we can fold them and keep for future use.
6 Turn off the tap water and brush the teeth.
Using a mug to hold water instead of let the tap water running while brushing teeth.
7 Reduce using bath tub to bath, instead using shower which can save lot of water.
8 Reuse rain water
Use buckets or containers to store rain. The water can be used for watering plants or washing balcony etc.
9. Lessen usage of detergent. About 70% of dirty clothes can use water to clean. Among them about 30% can be cleaned without detergent. Observe and differentiate the dirty level of things before washing , can make things more lasting.
10 Walking for health. We should try walking for short distance. This can boost our immune system too.
11 *Taking public transport. This can prevent suffering of traffic jam, difficulties to find parking. More people sharing public transport, can safe energy, reduce CO2 and others toxic gases.
12 Cultivate good habit while driving.
When car emergency brake and instantly speed up, it will use a lot of fuel. Hence, while start driving after stopping (eg at traffic light, junction), slowly speed up. It is better to switch off the engine if we need to stop for a long time.
13 Using recycled products.
In the process of making recycled paper, we not only reduce cutting tree, we also reduce air pollution by 75%, reduce water pollution by 35% and reduce huge disposal of solid waste. For
every tonne paper that we recycled, we can reduce the production of CO2 by 242kg.We can choose recycled plastic products, recycled papers, paper made stationery.
14 Buying energy saving electrical goods
Beside price, brand and gifts, we should choose electrical goods with energy saving features.
15 Avoid heavily packaged products
When shopping, we can choose simple packing, prepare our own shopping beg.
16 Change the habit of one time disposal habit
Always bring our own lunch box, spoon, spoon, chopstick, own shopping beg etc.
17 Once confirm the electric goods have fully charged, switch off the on off button and unplug.
18 Say no to plastic beg. We should say no to whatever that can become rubbish.

learning made easier
In the sun newspaper dated 13.2.07, child psychologist Goh Chee Leong
explained the 3 fundamental ways to help yr child's brain development by
creating healthy learning environment for children:
1) expand their horizon.
Expose them to different places(zoo, museum or bookstore) to gain
variety of experience. Travel is good too as it expands their mind and
fuel their curiosity.
2)reading is important
Read to children on anything. start fr young (1 or 2 yrs old). The idea
is to expose them to stories, characters and ideas.
3)be sensitive to their interest.
detect their interest and build on it, this is called Child Initiated
Learning. When a child ask a question, parent should always answer but
in a sensible way. If don't know, tell the child nicely, find out the
answer and the let the child know later.
If a child (age 3-6) awake 12 hours a day, no more than 40% of the day
(about 5 hrs)shd be structured learning(formal education in
kindergarten, piano classes, ballet, tuition etc)
There must be free time for unstructured learning(time to play). When a
child is playing , it is the time when information is being processed. The way
the brain operates is that it needs time to consolidate the info and
usually the info is when the child is playing.
A child, by nature, is already intellectually curious and seeks info.
The brain is designed to absorb info.
There are many children who hate learning because they associate it with
examination.Nowadays parents are very 'kiasu'(afraid of being defeated), they will try to arrange their children to attend tuitions classes and other structure learning classes. These will very likely will deprive their playing time. I met a mother whom send his son (age 6) to both sessions of kindergarten classes as the morning class do not teach Mandarin.Since she is english educated and she would like her son to go to chinese school later on. She also enrol her son to mandarin classes in the afternoon. Now at age of 9, his son give up to learn.
Points to ponder:
How much time we let our kids spent on structure learning? How about unstructured learning/playing time?
If our kids not happy while attending structure learning, are we as parents care about their feeling?

My experience in Parent-child bonding class
Once I know Tzu Chi organised Parent-Child Bonding Class, I reminded my friend whom is sending his daughter there to inform me whenever the next intake is open for registration.
On the first day of registration, I went to register together with another friend. I am really glad that I manage to get a place as I heard all places are taken up before evening on the first day.
I'm really gladful that I have the opportunity to accompany my son to learn things together.I think it is worth spending 9 Sunday morning in a year, as the benefit we have gained is enormous. This class is very different from other's dhamma class as each kid must be accompany by a parent and there are lots of activities are well planned to let us experience. Not merely theory.
The first lessons was regarding education. The Still Thoughts Aphorism learned was 'Do not do whatever you desired, but should always educate oneself'. Those volunteers performed a short performance to educate the kids about the rules of the class. These cracked lots of laughters whenever the kids observed those volunteer break the rules. Kids learned what they should and shouldn't do in a relax way.
In the movie regarding a paralysed man Ma Wen Zhong, whom have high mission despite his handicapped. He want to be a teacher for kids in his home town.He got to slide on a small stool and go to each house to beg their parents to let their kids have education. At first he managed to get few students. The students increasing slowly and his story was known by Tzu Chi Taiwan.Hence,Tzu Chi help him to build school there. It is via education, teacher Ma manage to change the destiny of the kids there.I that session, kids are asked to sit on a stool and moved around. It is to let them experience the suffering of Teacher Ma.Despite his difficulty to move around, he manage to achieved his dream. Our kids have learned that so long as there is a will, there will be a way.
Second lesson is on diligence and bamboo age.To educate the kids to save their extra pocket money in coin box made from bamboo. The money collected will be used for charity purposes. They will learn that by slowly accumulate small quantity of coins, they will get lots of coins eventually.Even though it is a very small good deed, it is worth doing. In the early formation years of Tzu Chi, each housewife and members are saving coins daily in coin box made from bamboo. The money have helped lots of poor and needy people in Taiwan and lots of places in the world. Each kids are given one bamboo coin box. They are suppose to save their extra pocket money and bring back at last lesson for charity purposes.
Third lesson we went to Taman Sinar Harapan, a mental retarded and handicapped centre in Kuala Kubu Bahru to give our great love. The Still Thoughts Aphorism learned were "It is indeed a blessing to be able to give our love.It is wise if we are able to reduce our anxiety."and "It really doesn't matter how much good deed we did, so long as the thing are what we are suppose to do, we must do it."Some kids were crying, some refuse to have contact with the residents there.Really, it is eye-opener for those first timer as the place can be described as 'hell in Earth'. Many of them are not mobile a they are physically and mentally retarded. Some are bed-ridden for life. However, as Tzu Chi people use to pay monthly visit there, the residents there can even sing Tzu Chi song and dance with it. Some also put their palm together and said '阿弥陀佛/A mi tho fo'.In the bus, a parent shared that he felt really contented and there is nothing lack in his life.Indeed, compare to them, we all appreciate whatever we have.
Fourth lesson is regarding to be filial piety to parents and control oneself and revive our old ancestor's teaching of having good manners. Firstly, children are told to put a balloon in their tummy and cover with an adult T-shirt, later they are required to do some house chores like mopping, cleaning table and tidying toys. Through this activity they will realize the hardship their mother need to go through during pregnancy.
All the kids are taught to bring a plate of 'kuih' to feed their father or mother. Before that they have to knelt down and show their gratitude to the parents. Also they promise to be a good child. My eyes starting to wet when I knew that my son would offer me food.My whole eye sight blurred when my son started to feed me.As I have never taught him to feed me before. Nothing I can utter, just remember I hug him tightly. During the sharing session, some parents said it was their first time to hug and kiss their kids.
Later, in a DVD show,we are taught by Master Cheng Yen that we should follow Western people's way, always tell our kids that we love them, also give them hug and kisses. This activity let me reflected that I never feed my own parents and never say 'I love you' to them too. According to a volunteer,Tzu chi every year also open for members to bring their parents to do the same thing.Lots of old parents are crying non-stop.
In fifth lesson, we are assigned to different recycling point to learn about importance and ways to recycle. We not only need to do environment recycling, we also need to do recycling in our inner self.Every thing is started from a determination, just like plant start from a seed.We are taught about things that can be recycled.(papers, glass, aluminium, old clothes, etc)
Why recycled is important and urgent?Due to global warming, our natural habitat was seriously effected. Those birds which use to fly down to warm countries during winter, did not do so as they don't feel the cold. Bears which use to hibernate during winter do not do so as the weather is not cold. They became so restless.
It is sad to know that lots of polar bears are dying. Due to global warming, the north pole iceberg are melting at high speed, hence there are big pools instead of ice land there.Usually once polar bear which dived into the water to find their prey, can easily climb up to ice land. But since the existence of big pools, many are died of exhaustion while finding ice land. Due to hard to find food, some even eat their own species.
Volunteers also presented a stage show to show what and why things need to be recycled.
In the sixth lesson, the theme is cooperation.Through the game called' relay of love'.Children learned that they need to cooperate with others so that can get the balls go into the pails.Another game is called the limp guide the blind. This is to let the kids feel the hardship that was underwent by a family, whom both parents have very poor eyesight. Really amazing that the mother still can cook and do house work, despite poor eyesight.
In the seventh lessons we are going to Jing -Si book and Cafe in Jalan Bukit Bintang to learn some art and craft. The Still Thoughts Aphorism learned was"those who manage their time well, sure will strive diligently to their aim of live"
In the last lessons, we are expose to charity and medical assistance provided by Tzu Chi. Before watching performance and movie on Kennan. Kids are required to experienced the difficulties underwent by him. 2 bottle of 1.5ml waters are put into a beg and tied to one of their leg. They need to walk down and up the stair case.Later, get over some obstacles.A performance started to describe he was having giant legs for 15 years after an accidents. All doctors told him he must have his leg amputated. However, Tzu Chi Hospital in Taiwan revive his hope of having his normal leg. Through series of operation, he got his normal leg back.He became Tzu chi volunteer later.
p/s:
No doubt the medium language used is Mandarin, but most of the slide got English translation. They are parents whom are English educated sending their kids there.Look at another point, it is good opportunity to learn Mandarin.Cost fee is RM180.
Tzu Chi have a series of classes that suit for anyone age 7 till university level.
On the first day of registration, I went to register together with another friend. I am really glad that I manage to get a place as I heard all places are taken up before evening on the first day.

The gift of life
Sin Chew Daily (3/11/07) reported a boy aged 4 fell down from his 2 feet high bed in the middle of the night. He cried and kept on vomiting. The next morning he lost his conscious. He was sent to hospital immediately to operation room.Dr. told his parents that his brain was death. His parents decided to donate his cornea, kidney and heart.
Despite their grief, they have made a wise decision to donate their son's organs to benefits others. They hope by donating their son's organs, will make their son's short live becomes more meaningful.
The sad mother said, 2 yrs ago she already has intention to donate her organs if she pass away,Now her son has fulfilled her wish before she does hers.
This is really a very sad accident.Even 2 feet high bed can kill a boy. In my house there is no bed as I have 2 bad experience.First is my son fell down from the bed at age of 1.He was lucky as he just suffered injury in his nose and face. The next accident happen at age of 2, which successfully 'convinced' my husband to take away the bed. My son was jumping on the bed with his elder brother. He fell down and hit his chin on the wooden plank between 2 beds.He was later undergone a plastic surgery to join back his broken chin. The cost is Rm3000++, which is more expensive than cost of delivering him.
On the other hand, feel really touched as despite their sadness, the parents of the boys have made a wise decision to donate their son's organ.Well, recently In Malaysia the trend of donating organ become more common. If this trend persist, lots of precious life can be saved.
If you are interested to donate your organ you may inquire:

Another IEM patient's story-MSUD
Shun family is not vegetarian, but ever since Shi Han was born, the
family have not eaten meat and eggs.
If they whole family went out for fast food, while his elder brother is
eating crispy chicken, Shi Han just request his brother to let him
smell.Later, he will quietly go to eat ice cream, potato chips and drink
his soft drink.
In kindergarten, while teacher distributing biscuit, everyone will eat
the biscuit directly.Shi Han just keep it in his beg, till evening
whenhis mom come back, he will ask his mom if he can eat it? His mom
will said:"cannot as inside biscuit got nuts".Shi han was diagnosed with
MAPLE SYRUP URINE DISEASE (MSUD)while he is still infant, no medication
will cure him.He will never get cured, can just control his diet, do
blood test to prevent the disease became worst.
Since their body cannot digest meat, egg, milk and beans.Even a nut or an
egg, will cause damage to their cell, influence their IQ, even endanger
their life. What is MSUD?Doctor cannot give him explanation, only suggest
her to bring her son to GH to seek help.
It is called MSUD as the urine and body's liquid of the patient got
smell of maple syrup. It is a rare genetically defect disease (IEM).Due
to the body cannot process high protein food like meat, egg, milk, beans
etc.Even a nut or agg will threaten the health, cause damage to the
brain cell, effect IQ or endanger the life.
hence, he had to be very careful on the type of food to eat. His mother
always teach him what are the food he can take or cannot take
(The article above was translated from China Press dated 20/4/07)
IGNORANCE WILL ENDANGER THE PATIENTS
IEM is diseases due to sudden changes in gene, which will effect the
proses of metabolisme.
In this world, out of every 1500 new born babies, 1 will be IEM patient.
Due to the variety of IEM diseases and it is very rare, hence not easy to
diagnosed. However, lots of IEM diseases if not diagnosed early. It will
damage the body function. If patients are diagnosed early, not given the
early medication/treatment or special milk powder, it may endanger their
life or left regrettable impairment, eg: mental retarded, physically
disability etc. Shi han's is consider lucky among IEM patients.
While he was 2 1/2 month, he suddenly had cough, high fever, later even
had difficulty to breath and fainted. However, the hospital that he was
admitted cannot diagnosed the root cause of the illness. It is when he
was sent to GH then his illness is diagnosed.
FORMING OF MMS
Majority of IEM patients do not understand the illness. Some even wasted
many years to seek doctors, yet none of them is able to tell them the
illness that their kid has. In order to avoid other's family repeat
their mistake, a group of IEM patient's parent are forming Malaysian
Metabolic Society (MMS) on 22/7/05. The mission of IEM is to create
public awareness by providing IEM info.
Parents can easily find info and book abt MSUD in Taiwan.Locally, due to
financial problem, no one is writing about it, hence it is hard to find
related info. However, the newborn screening technology provided by
certain GH in Malaysia is among the best in South East Asia. AT early
stage, IEM diseases is not significant. It is through new born screening
that will able to give new born baby who has IEm diseases, to have
appropriate treatment.
If you want to help those IEM patients, you can donate to MMS.
All cheques payable to
Malaysia Metabolic Society or Persatuan Metabolik Malaysia,
PO Box 6098 Pudu,
55710 Kuala Lumpur
or
you can be MMS members, (individual annual fee is RM25, family annual
fee is RM30, corporation annual fee is RM10,000. Plus RM5 registration fee)
